The Tatanka Mountain Bike Race has always taken place in large part on the Centennial Trail #89. The “logo” of the Centennial is a buffalo skull silhouette, which we have incorporated and used in various ways since the beginning of the race, and also inspired the name of the Tatanka race.
The Tatanka takes place as part of a festival in Sturgis. In the early days of the festival, it was run in collaboration with the Sturgis Center for the Arts. At that time artists were set up as vendors, art classes, all manner of art sales and creation happening at the start/finish venue as part of the festival. In keeping with the tradition of art being a large component of the race and race venue, we commission unique art to serve as the event art from a new local artist each year.
